For many people Counter Strike is a way of life. However it has increasingly become clear that in an ever changing world we must address the global challenges we face to reduce our impact on the environment and to provide a better future for our children and the planet.

This page contains a number of simple things that we can all do to contribute to the sustainability of the environments in which we all play.

Never leave doors open

We have become accustomed to running through doors in order to attack an enemy, defend a hostage, or simply to run away from danger. Often we carelessly leave the doors open without considering its effect. However did you know that by simply closing the door on the way through you could save 2 tonnes of greenhouse gases a year from being pumped into the atmosphere?

When doors are left open, air conditioning systems do not perform optimally and will use more power over time. By closing the door you not only save extra energy being consumed and generating toxic carbon dioxide emissions, but you can save money.

Consider the double doors on cs_assault. These should be shut at all times. What is more important: the life of a hostage, or the entire existence of the human race? Think of your children next time you carelessly leave the door open behind you.

Simple changes like this CAN make a difference!

Dont use sprays

We all love to spray. Its brings us a sense of freedom and self expression. But what value is freedom when you are engulfed in a burning ball of flames that is the planet Earth?

Everytime you spray you release dangerous CFCs into the atmosphere. The effects of these are twofold. Firstly you damage millions of brain cells whenever you breath in the noxious gases. And secondly the CFCs rapidly deplete the Earths ozone layers, causing harmful UV-A and UV-B rays to reach the earths surface.

The National Centre for Cancerous Ozone Research estimates that the continued use of sprays in Counter Strike could result in a 450% increase in bowel cancer by 2030.

Immense damage has already been done through the use of sprays in Counter Strike 1.6 and earlier releases, but with commitment from the gaming community some of this damage may be reversed, but we must act now. Do not let humanity pay the price of our inaction.

Use AWPs

Every time you fire a gun what do you think happens to the bullet and casing? Bullets are made from lead which is toxic to human and animal health.

In 2005 over 700 donkeys in Afghanistan died as a result of lead poisining from inadvertently swalling used bullets and empty shell casings. The Global Institute for Animal Health Care recently released a report predicting a 5-fold increase in the donkey mortality rate within the next 10 years.

Lead also ends up in sands and soils, usually in childrens playgrounds. What remains is flushed down the drainage system where it destroys aquatic life including the highly endangered Black Hairy Seal.

A simple solution to this is to use an AWP. With this high precision, high powered weapon only one bullet per enemy death is required therefore cutting lead output by a potentially massive 96%. Even if an AWP is not used, a considerable amount of lead output may be saved by switching from a sub-machine gun or rifle to a handgun or scout.

So please, next time you choose your weapon think of the native Afghanistan Donkey. Your children will thank you.
