November 2007

28-Nov-2007 - A morning in the life..

of Ray! Julian just got his new phone and he has been taking photos like crazy.

He sent me some that he took the other morning. It was election day 24th November, and we were eating "breakfast" in Newtown.

Mmmm.. breakfast

Now when I say breakfast its probably about 1pm or 2pm. Yes I like to sleep in late on the weekends!

All 3 of us (Ben, Julian and myself) were eating Eggs Benedict with Bacon. There is something about eating eggs which have the same name as the pope which is a little bit disturbing.

We were eating at Cinque, a cafe next to the Dendy cinemas.

Ben is messaging

Right next to us was the Socialist Alliance people. They are always there every weekend, but today was election day and they were out in force! They were all wearing t-shirts that said "Howard Hater" on them - ironic since they seem to apply the same label of 'Hater' to Howard himself. We discussed getting t-shirts that would say 'Socialist Hater'.

Amused at the complete futility of it all

The vast majority of people who walk past want nothing to do with them. Only the rare hippy ever stops to have a look and maybe if they are very lucky buy a badge.

These guys are all Marxists. Umm hello? USSR.. Vietnam.. East Germany.. Cambodia.. Ethiopia. What do these countries have in common? They all suck big time - economically bankrupt, socially destroyed, or have completely failed and turned towards capitalism to help them get out of their holes. China is now only enjoying a boom because it has moved towards capitalism and away from socialism. Anyway enough ranting... but one cant help but be amused.

Ben is not amused

Julian took lots of photos. Lots and lots and lots of photos. In fact it wasnt just in the morning it was all day :-)

The waiter. Not amused

The boys had coffee and we chatted about politics, people we know, and just general crap as usual :-)

We are not amused

We often come to this cafe on the weekend before heading out to do our weekendly activities whatever they may be. Today me and Jules were heading to Darling Harbour to see the Honda Asimo robot, and later that night to go to an old skool party at Taylors. Ben was heading off to do something to do with cars or something.. yeah cars.. something :-P

Heading off

But first it was across the road to vote for Ben. I had voted just before brekky at the same place.

And thats its! Wow.. exciting I hear you say.
Yes exciting indeed.

23-Nov-2007 - Best rave of 2007

Scattered XI

17th November, 2007

Whitlam Leisure Centre, Memorial Ave, Liverpool

Last saturday I went to a rave out at Liverpool called Scattered XI. It was hyped up as "an event that will live in the mind for a lifetime" and where "people from the scenes past, present and future gather to celebrate".

I've heard hyped up promotion before and more often than not they dont like up to the hype.

Not this time!

Main room

It was definately the best party of 2007!! The main attraction was Scooter, a classic rave group. They have been around for years and so the party drew a more diverse crowd of older and younger ravers.

From the moment I turned up, the signs were good... the party was organised far better than other parties have been recently. It took about 5 minutes to get in the door (no 1 hour wait like Prophecy!). I went with Julian and when we got inside it was the beginning of an hour long oldskool set which was AWESOME!

Love this photo. Looks like the second room

The vibe of the night was much more like it used to be - everyone having a great time. No, not just a great time.. but a fantastic time!! No bad attitudes. In fact there was a distinct lack of lads, aggression and violence... which unfortunately have been trademarks of the scene lately.

There was one large main room, plus a smaller sized room. I spent most of the night in the main room. Also we have VIP passes, which despite the name dont really mean much other than access into a couple of extra areas - a smaller dance room with its own DJ, and a separate outdoor chillout section which was a lot less packed than the main one.

More purple anyone? Back in the main room

After Suae played a great set it was time for Scooter. Behind the main stage a huge array of LEDs started flashing the name 'Scooter', there was an explosion of fireworks as Scooter jumped onto the stage. The feeling in the crowd was amazing - I hadnt seen it in a long time. Everyone was going crazy, and unlike other live acts I have seen in the past, everyone was dancing and not just watching.

Now Scooter is what you would probably class as a 'cheesy pop oldskool techno sound'. Maybe. If you think of techno, add some cheese, some chipmunks and a bit more cheese then you have Scooter. Choons, Chipmunks, Cheese. For most artists this combination usually ends up in disaster, but somehow Scooter manages to pull it off, and I have to say his show was absolutely awesome!

Scooter!!

The main guy H.P. Baxxter, had two DJs backing him up. He has the perfect voice to hype up the crowd and to add vocals to the tracks he creates. The set lasted for 1.5 hours and was the highlight of the night.

To top it off Scott Brown, one of the worlds biggest Happy Hardcore / Old Skool producers who has created so many rave classics was playing after him. Normally Scott Brown himself would be the main attraction at a party - so this night was full of huge names.

Laserzzzz :-)

Both Julian and myself had a great time, and I had to buy a Scattered tshirt on the way out! :-)

I almost didnt go to this party because it was quite expensive, but i'm so glad I did. Highlight of the year!! :-)
