12-Mar-2008 - Party update

I like to use this blog not only to rant about meaningless rubbish, but to also record all the raves and major parties that I go to. There have been a few over the past couple of months and I need to catch up.. so here goes!

Dream Universe "The Fifth Element"

19th January, 2008

Nineveh Sports & Community Club,
673-683 Smithfield Road, Edensor Park

This was the fifth instalment of the dream universe series of parties and it was held in the hall of a big sports club. I think the patrons of the club (which was still operating in other areas) were quite surprised to see all the raver types descend onto the premises.

The party itself was OK.. I wouldnt say anything special. Lots of hardstyle etc.. There was the one main room and a small chillout area outside. Apart from that there really isnt much to say about this party, except that Julian took a few nice snaps with his phone camera..

Another Powerhouse Productions (PHP) party. Something funny has recently happened with PHP. After spending years and years growing their parties to huge proportions, they are suddenly seeming to die.

This party was huge, it had 3 rooms and a couple of thousand people, but PHP were expecting a lot more since it was filled with international DJs.

One of the rooms

I have to say that I have always been very skeptical of 'internationals'. The reason being that apart from a very small few, the majority of them dissapoint. They dont know the local style of music and the track that locals go off to, and they tend to play a lot of their newer not-so-great stuff rather than their 'classics' which made them famous in the first place.

On top of this, internationals cost a lot more. I think this is a big problem with PHP parties these days, along with certain groups of people that are drawn to powerhouse parties *cough* LADS *cough*. PHP has constantly pushed for greater crowds and bigger parties and has ignored the 'true raver' so to speak, and they now seem to be reaping what they have sown.

Having said that, I still enjoyed the party. But from what I heard a lot of other people were disappointed.

:-)

It is going to be interesting to see what happens to PHP in the coming year. I'm reckon they made a big financial loss on this party.

Channel 80085 - DSS party

Wow! What can I say...

This party really made me wake up to a scene that I never realised existed, and an atmosphere that I thought was long gone.

I had heard about a free drum and bass party and decided at the last minute with Julian that we would go (we decided about 10:30pm on the night!).

When we turned up it was an amazing atmosphere... just like the early 90's rave days. It was held in a big run down warehouse (apparently scheduled for demolition), and there were around 1000 people. They were mostly in their mid 20's and even 30's.. and were all having a great time. There was no security and no mod-cons of the legal raves of today, and with all the people there was no trouble whatsoever. It really shows the difference the type of crowd can make. A good crowd with a good vibe makes a great party.

One of the main rooms before the party

The same room during the party

There were 5 (yes five!) rooms in the complex. The large one pictured above had two sections each playing different styles of music. But the best room by far was the drum and bass room.

Drum and bass room being set up

The only DnB room image I have from the night

It was a large room with a massive sound system. The room had large tin sheet walls to the side and the bass reverberated on the tin sheets making a surprisingly cool effect. There was a laser and light setup and did I mention massive sound system! Yeah!!

It was only after a couple of hours that I was at the party that I discovered there were more rooms!! Out the side of the complex was another entrance which led to a large room being used for live acts.

Live act room

There were not that many people in this room for the size of it. But inside there was a very dark staircase leading up to another section. The stair case was pitch black and it was difficult to see where you were walking. At the top it entered into a little hallway section where there were 2 smaller rooms each playing their own styles of music.

One room could only hold about 6 people dancing. The DJ was on the floor at the end of the room. Very intimate indeed! But some people werent happy with this situation and later on in the night I returned to discover the walls to this room had been ripped down turning it into an even bigger room!

Partial demolition of walls in the small room

Lets hope it wasnt asbestos or we are all going to die!

And at the end of the corridor was a room which held about 8-10 people dancing and played hardstyle and similar music.

Outside the complex was a chillout type area where there were fire twirlers, and later in the night a group with bongos etc going around.

An outside shot

The police turned up a few times throughout the night and threatened to shut down part of the party. But it never happened, and the party continued uninterupted.

I really thought this party was just awesome! It had the best crowd, and awesome vibe amongst everyone. There was no BS that often happens at parties these days, no pretension, no violence, no peaking kids etc.

It really brought back a vibe that I havent seen for about 10 years. I'll definately be on the lookout for the next party these guys put on.

13-Feb-2008 - I'm alive!

Yes thats right. Much to everyone's disappointment.

I have been very lazy lately and havent updated this site in over 2 months.. the longest period since its creation a few years ago.

Christmas, New Years, and a bunch of raves and events have gone by... all being unblogged. This situation had to be rectified, and today is "Sorry" day. I'm sorry for leaving the blog so long. Not sorry about anything else though ;-)

I will start the new year by announcing my complete and miserable failure in my previous year's New Years Resolutions. What are new years resolutions for if you can't break them? Right? Am I right? I dont hear a response... ??

So here is a summary of what happened to them:

Run a half marathon

First some good news. As previously announced this was completed. It was the scariest resolution of all because I had no idea if I could actually pull it off. But I did. Hooray for actually completing something!

Learn surfing

Do you know what.. Bugger it.. I'm marking this resolution as completed as well. The goal of this resolution was to learn how to surf. And even though I couldnt do it very well at the end, at least I gave it a go and learnt how to sort of do it. It was fun and I tried something new.

Make a music video

Ok time for some failures. I recorded all the video for this, and even started making it, but in the end I just got lazy and didnt complete it. I really wish I had of though. Its sitting on my computer looking at me saying "finish me!". But i'm still ignoring it, instead focussing my love and attention on Counter Strike.

Lose 5kg / 5% body fat

Fail! Damn it I put on 5kg at the start of the year, spent most of it losing what I had already put on, then proceeded to put on another 2kg. So I actually gained 2kg! I have no excuse, so I hang my head in shame... ooh whats that on the table... a cookie!!

Create a music track

Again.. FAIL! I started playing around, but thats all that ever really happened. I guess when I got my decks and vinyl I got a bit distracted. That and the fact that I am a lazy arse who prefers to play Counter Strike all night.

Read two classic books

This was another one I completed. The first one I finished in fact. I have started reading more than I usually do, so I guess this actually had an effect. Who would have thought?

Swim a total of 50km

Last, but definately not least was this resolution. It was a challenge and a half. Unfortunately I have to announce another FAIL... but I was oh so close!! I reached 47.5km but in the last few weeks when I had planned on completing it I got a cold. In the end I was left with only a few days to do about 5km. I did 2.5 but never finished it. Damn. :-(

So yeah thats it. 3 out of 7 challenges completed. 4 out of 7 challenges FAILED. :-)

Well i've got plenty more to talk about but I will leave that to another day. Happy new year! :-)
